Autumn is finally here and although we wave a sad goodbye to summer, there’s certainly something a little magical about this time of year, with the nights drawing in, the leaves falling from the trees in beautiful shades of reds, browns and yellows, the opportunity for lots of cosy nights in with the family. As seasons go, there are definitely worse ones out there!
Because this is the time of year when our thoughts turn inwards and we start spending a bit more time at home than we would perhaps do during spring and summer, it’s the perfect opportunity to do a spot of redecorating. So, if you’re looking for inspiration, what about giving your living spaces a hygge twist right now?
Hygge itself is a Danish concept, which has come to encapsulate the idea of cosiness and the creation of more intimate settings at home - and it’s proven to be incredibly popular over the last few years, for both professional interior stylists and those at-home designers keen to make their properties warm and welcoming.
The key to getting it right is to adopt a minimalist approach to your design ideas, but not so much so that you end up with stark living spaces - you need to get the minimalist look balanced with warmth, comfort and softness, wherever and whenever possible.
To achieve this, perhaps look at your lighting system first of all, as a good place to begin. If your lighting isn’t right, it will be difficult to achieve this sense of warmth and cosiness.
Instead of having one main light in each room, for example, bring in various light sources and position them strategically so you can create an ambient glow, rather than have something harsh overhead. Installing a dimmer switch can also help you get your lighting right, hitting the hygge trend head on.
It’s also advisable to pay close attention to fabrics, as this can have a huge impact on the look and feel of your rooms.
Bringing in a range of textiles in different textures can help build layers of interest - everything from wool and velvet to sheepskin and herringbone. You’ll have a great time choosing complementary materials to bring in!
As for your colour palette, it’s all about building a sense of calm throughout your home and, to achieve this, a neutral palette is ideal in addition to making the most of the natural light that comes flooding into your home.
What you don’t want, however, is to have something too bright as this could be overwhelming, so soften the look with off-whites, browns, and creams.
