How Interior Design Can Boost Your Health & Wellbeing

Sunday 10th October is World Mental Health Day, so we wanted to share a few tips that can help you protect your mental and emotional wellbeing by creating a calm and positive environment to relax, socialise and live in.

Consider Light and Colour

To provide a boost to your sense of wellbeing, start by looking at the amount of natural light you have coming into your living spaces. You can increase the amount of natural light you have in your interior by using mirrors to bounce the light around the space. You'll find your rooms will feel lighter and airier.

Curtain choice can also have a big impact on how much light you have coming in, so if you want more light, swap heavy drapes for blinds so you can control light levels more easily. If you need privacy, consider using sheer fabrics and voiles which will diffuse the natural light but not block it out entirely.

Colour is also something to factor in when trying to make rooms look and feel lighter. Choose paler shades and neutral colours, as well as glossier paints, to help bounce the light around the room. Also think about what you use the various rooms for, as this will help you decide what colours and patterns to choose in your home. If you want the room to be relaxing consider using soft blues and greens. For an energising scheme, choose warms tones of yellows or ochre.

Tidy Home....Tidy Mind

Do you have a lot of clutter in your home? Try embracing minimalism as a concept! A sense of space can help us feel calmer and more organised, but if you have stuff everywhere even the largest of rooms can feel cramped and claustrophobic.

It can be difficult to get rid of belongings but a good rule of thumb to follow is that if you’ve not used something in a year, charity shop it, re-gift or recycle it. For more inspiration read Marie Kondo’s The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying or watch her Netflix documentary Tidying Up with Marie Kondo so see how it’s done and what the benefits could be.

Bring the outdoors in

The biophilia trend has been widely embraced by Interior designers and stylists. It’s a really easy and fun way to decorate your home, while giving yourself the mental health boost you’ve been looking for.

Biophilic design is all about feeling more connected to nature and the environment by bringing in direct and indirect experiences of the outside world within your home. This could be achieved by celebrating natural light for example, or introducing lots of fresh plants in your rooms.

Nature can also be represented in your interior using materials and fabrics, colours, wall decor, motifs, and patterns from the natural world

Even if you’re not a professional interior designer, the biophilic aesthetic is an easy trend to apply and even the smallest of touches will help to create a calm and relaxing space.

Introduce a houseplant or choose natural colours like blues, greens, ochres and yellows.

Of course, these are just a few ideas you could incorporate at home. We’d love to hear how you have designed your home to boost your wellbeing. Post your photos on Instagram with the hashtag #mcalistertextiles.
